“I want a family that I feel safe with.” That’s what Katie shared with us when we asked her what she wanted in an adoptive family. Not a big house or a nice car or a lot of money or other material things…just a place to feel safe. In a lot of ways, Katie is a typical teen. She loves to swim, draw, travel and explore. She loves to eat Takis, chili dogs, pizza, tacos, and…let’s just say that Katie is not a picky eater! In fact, one of her favorite memories is visiting a local restaurant with her bio mom and enjoying dipping fruit in a chocolate fountain. That simple but meaningful moment speaks to what foster care and being available for adoption means to Katie. While she understands that her connection to her old life has changed, she still longs for those simple but meaningful moments with family…her new family. Katie’s new family will need to help her navigate the emotions around loss and new beginnings, but Katie is more than ready to start fresh.
